Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of May 13, 2017)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Kendrick Lamar with DAMN. ruled the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart (BB200) for a second week, as the set earned 238,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 27, according to Nielsen Music. That marked a decline of 61% compared to its debut frame a week earlier of 603,000 units.
DAMN.’s second week was driven by streams, as its SEA total is 136,000 units (down 40%). The set sold 87,338 in traditional album sales (down 75%) and earned 14,000 in TEA units (down 39%).

Sheryl Crow with BE MYSELF (Wylie Songs | Warner Bros.) made a debut at #22. It sold 9,583 copies and was the 8th best seller of the week in America.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of May 13, 2017)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Brad Paisley with LOVE AND WAR (Arista Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) bounded in atop Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart (dated May 13), earning 29,000 equivalent album units (25,577 in pure sales) in its first week (ending April 27), according to Nielsen Music. On the all-genre Billboard 200, the set made a bow at No.13.

Love and War marked Paisley’s ninth Top Country Albums No.1, all of which have launched at the summit.

Promoting the album Paisley was confirmed to make three national TV appearances: NBC’s “Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon”,  nationally-syndicated “Entertainment Tonight” on Thursday, April 20 and on the album’s street date, Friday, April 21, the Arista Nashville entertainer was a guest on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

An Associated Press review of the album enthuses, “The hidden secret is that Paisley can play the paint off a guitar and get the biggest names in the business to sing along with him on his strongest tracks”

Chart History: He first ruled with his third album, MUD ON THE TIRES, which bowed at No.1 on Aug. 9, 2003 (with 86,000 sold). He followed with the leaders TIME WELL WASTED (2005; 193,000 debut sales), 5TH GEAR (2007; 197,000 sales), PLAY (2008; 54,000), AMERICAN SATURDAY NIGHT (2009; 130,000 sales), THIS IS COUNTRY MUSIC (May 23, 2011; 152,598 sales), WHEELHOUSE (April 9, 2013; 100,441 sales) and MOONSHINE IN THE TRUNK (Aug 26, 2014; 53,312 sales).
Paisley’s first set, WHO NEEDS PICTURES, released June 1, 1999, debuted on the Top Country Albums chart dated June 19, 1999, at No.29 (selling 4,000 copies) and peaked at No.13 that November. It was certified Gold on April 10, 2000 and then Platinum on Feb 27, 2001 for 1 Million sales.
His sophomore LP, PART II, released May 29, 2001, opened and peaked at No. 3 in 2001 (38,000 sold). It was certified Gold on April 10, 2002 and Platinum on August 26, 2002 for sales of 1.0 million units.

Love and War‘s album cover features a full-body shot of Paisley, signature white cowboy hat flying off his head, playing his guitar. The album’s title appears next to him, spray-painted in white block lettering.
Paisley co-produced Love and War with Luke Wooten and co-wrote all 16 of the LP’s songs. Collaborators on the album range from Country Music Hall of Famer Bill Anderson (“Dying to See Her”) to rock legends Mick Jagger (“Drive of Shame”) and John Fogerty (the title track), and pop/R&B-hip-hop luminary Timbaland (“Grey Goose Chase”).
Meanwhile, the set’s “Gold All Over the Ground” is based on a poem Johnny Cash wrote in 1967 as a tribute to his wife, June Carter Cash. The song’s video, filmed at the Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tenn., includes footage of the legendary couple.
The first track from Love and War, “Today,” reached No. 7 on Hot Country Songs (March 11) and No.3 on Country Airplay (March 25). Current single “Last Time for Everything” re-enters Hot Country Songs at No. 42
and jumps 54-42 on Country Airplay, increasing 108% to 2.6 million audience impressions.

Critical reception for Brad Paisley’s Love and War:
16 Tracks/ Time: 58:41 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

Allmusic (Rating 2.1/2 STARS) Paisley hauls out all his old tricks, singing about the love of country and family, heartbreak, and middle-aged melancholy, then adds a heavy dose of superstar power.....the shiny production, shopworn jokes, and eager melodies have the
cumulative effect of seeming too ready to please any audience that comes his way. Since Paisley still has his skills, this is often enjoyable -- he knows how to craft songs and can play a mean guitar -- but it's hard not to hear Love and War and think Paisley would be a little bit better off if he learned a lesson from Jagger and Fogerty: sometimes, it's better not to try so hard.

Rollingstone (Rating: 3 STARS) …Also per usual, there's filler, none too embarrassing – Paisley's pro enough that even his apparent phone-ins are well-crafted. But over 16 tracks, you can't help but wish that one of country's greatest would shoot consistently higher than easy chuckles and sentimental homilies.

Paste Magazine (Rating: 6.7/10) The back half of the album with “selfie” and his Timbaland collabs is pure chaff, the kind of filler that a major label artist can afford to get away with. As with so many other artists of his tax bracket, he needs some better angels in his entourage who can steer him away from indulgence or trim the fat from overstuffed albums like this. Then again, it won’t matter much once Paisley’s onstage, coaxing the exact emotional response that these songs demand from thousands of likeminded fans.
Sounds Like Nashville (Rating: Positive) Few artists could segue as effortlessly as Paisley does from a rocking number with Jagger to a poignant ballad. While his collaborations are impressive, so is his insight. Love and War is a roller coaster ride of emotions that blends the good and evil of our society..... It is this insight that stays with the listener long after the final note is played, making Love and War a welcomed addition to country fans’ collections.
