Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of March 25, 2017)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Ed Sheeran with ÷ (Divide) blasted in at No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart (BB200), earning a whopping 451,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 10, according to Nielsen Music. That’s the largest week for an album in 2017, and the biggest since J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only launched at No. 1 with 492,000 on the Dec. 31, 2016-dated list.
Further, ÷ starts with 322,307 in traditional album sales -- again, the largest sales frame for an album since 4 Your Eyez Only debuted with 363,000 copies sold.
This is Sheeran’s second No.1 album on the Billboard 200, following the chart-topping bow of his previous studio effort, x (Multiply), in 2014. That set launched with 208,974 in traditional album sales (before the Billboard 200 transitioned to a ranking based on equivalent album units) and trailed that year the arrivals of Coldplay's "Ghost Stories" (383,000), Eric Church's "The Outsiders" (288,000) and Brantley Gilbert's "Just As I Am" (211,000).

Additionally, ÷ logged the biggest streaming week for an album since 4 Your Eyez Only’s debut frame. ÷ earned 90,000 streaming equivalent album units (which equates to 134.6 million streams of songs from the album in the tracking week). 4 Your Eyez Only arrived with 118,000 streaming equivalent album units (176.9 million streams of the album’s songs).
Sheeran made a bow at No.5 on the Billboard 200 (chart dated June 30, 2012) with his first full-length album, "+." (Asylum Atlantic; pronounced "plus"). The set started with 41,744 sales and debuted at No.1 on the Folk Albums chart. Seventy-nine percent of its first-week sales were digital downloads. Sheeran's US arrival marked the highest debut for a U.K. solo artist's first full-length album since Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream" bowed at No.1 on Dec, 12, 2009.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of March 25, 2017)

Billboard Country Airplay (Chart issue week of March 25, 2017)

Jon Pardi scored his second No.1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart — both drawn from his sophomore LP, CALIFORNIA SUNRISE — as “Dirt on My Boots” (Capitol Nashville) kicked 2-1 on the March 25 list, increasing 5% to 42.7 million audience impressions in the tracking week ending March 12, according to Nielsen Music.
“Dirt” lifted to a new Hot Country Songs peak (3-2). It also climbed 3-2 on Country Digital Song Sales (21,000 downloads sold, down 4%) and helds with a bullet at No. 3 on Country Streaming Songs (5.8 million U.S. streams, up 7%).

The song, penned by Rhett Akins, Jesse Frasure and Ashley Gorley, is also Pardi’s second straight Country Airplay leader with the word “boots” in its title. Lead California Sunrise single “Head Over Boots” became his first No. 1 on Aug. 27, 2016.
“Head” took 46 weeks to reach the summit, becoming the third-longest trek to the top of the chart, dating to the launch of Country Airplay on Jan. 20, 1990. In comparison, “Dirt” topped the tally in its 25th frame.
“Being No.1 is a fresh, new place for me, and I’m loving it,” Pardi told Billboard. “I really appreciate country radio playing two pretty traditional-sounding songs back-to-back.”
Was there any hesitation in releasing a second single with “Boots” in the title? “Nah,” says Pardi. “ ‘Dirt on My Boots’ was pegged as the second single from California Sunrise from the get-go. We felt like it was just a fun song to go with. Plus, I had complete support from my label. They had no hesitation at all.”
As for Pardi’s traditional bent, “a great song is a great song,” says Cumulus Nash director of programming John Shomby. “I don’t really think it matters whether a song leans more pop or more traditional — as long as it’s strong — and ‘Dirt’ is just a fun country song. If you’ve seen Pardi perform it live, you really get the sense as to why the audience loves it. It’s fun and hooky, and it’s easy to sing along to. It has all the ingredients for a hit.”

Kelsea Ballerini notched her fourth total and consecutive top 10 on the Country Airplay chart from debut full-length THE FIRST TIME as “Yeah Boy” (Black River) rolled 11-10, gaining by 5% to 24.5 million in audience.
“Boy” follows Ballerini’s three prior top 10s on Country Airplay, all of them spending a week at No. 1: “Love Me Like You Mean it” (July 4, 2015), “Dibs” (March 5, 2016) and “Peter Pan” (Sept. 24, 2016).
Ballerini is the first solo female to bank at least four top 10s on Country Airplay from a first LP since Taylor Swift notched five between 2006 and 2008 from her self-titled debut: “Tim McGraw” (No. 6), “Teardrops on My Guitar” (No. 2), “Our Song” (No. 1, six weeks), “Picture to Burn” (No. 3) and “Should’ve Said No” (No. 1, two weeks). Meanwhile, Ballerini shared space in the top 10 of Country Airplay with Swift, as the latter wrote Little Big Town’s “Better Man,” which dipped 5-8 after two weeks atop the chart.
Among all artists, Ballerini is the first to generate at least four top 10s on Country Airplay from a debut LP since Sam Hunt notched five (including four No. 1s) between 2014 and 2016.

It’s the end of an era for Rayna James as she tragically passed away in the most recent heartbreaking episode of CMT’s Nashville.
“It’s devastating,” said Connie Britton when CMT’s Nashville delivered one of the saddest, most heartbreaking and — yes — devastating death scenes in TV history. Rayna Jaymes — having already suffered through being held at knifepoint by a crazed stalker, a car crash and emergency surgery — unexpectedly slipped away at the end of February 23, 2017 aired episode, “If Tomorrow Never Comes.”
After being held hostage during an assault with her stalker and surviving a critical car accident on the way home, Rayna’s recovery looked hopeful among doctors and family. But following complications of one of her surgeries, she died due to her failing organs after artificially receiving blood pressure assistance. Both Nashies and the cast mourned the loss of Rayna, as well as said a heartfelt goodbye to Connie Britton for the duration of the series.

Rayna Jaymes was laid to rest on Thursday's March 2, 2017 episode of CMT's "Nashville."
The fictional country singer — played by the series' former lead star, Connie Britton — died suddenly in the previous week's episode, following Britton's decision to depart from "Nashville" to pursue other opportunities.
While her burial was a small gathering, a group of a dozen or so family members and, conveniently, every other star of the show,  the show culminated in a live musical tribute to Britton's character, as part of the CMT Music Awards.
The tribute to Jaymes included two new songs. Will Lexington's (Chris Carmack) "By Your Side" was written by Chance Peña and Simon Gugala. "Sanctuary" is said to be one of Jaymes' own songs, though this episode was the first time viewers have heard it. The song was originally supposed to be performed at the CMT Music Awards by Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere), but it's ultimately sung by Jaymes' daughters (Lennon and Maisy Stella) and Deacon Claybourne (Charles Esten). "Sanctuary" was penned by Sarah Siskind, Jill Andrews and Gary Nicholson.
