CMA Awards 2016 Running Order

1) Performance – 7:01 – 7:14: Show kicked off showing some vintage clips of big stars like Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, Reba and so many more. Then on came a plethora of veteran artists and past years winners. Vince Gill played Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried” with Merle’s son Ben Haggard on Telecaster. Carrie Underwood sings 30 seconds of “Stand By Your Man.” Roy Clark enters with Brad Paisley playing Buck Owens’ “Tiger By The Tail”. Charley Pride sings a slice of “Kiss An Angel Good Morning”. Alabama performs and Charlie Daniels comes out fiddlin’ playing “Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Reba sings the hook of “Fancy” and Dwight Yoakam enters singing “Guitar, Cadillacs.” Clint Black adds “Killin’ Time,” Ricky Skaggs strikes out with 30 secs of “Country Boy.” 17 seconds of Alan Jackson followed singin, “Forever and Ever” with a centre stage Randy Travis standing who rounds out with “A-Men!”

3) Presentation & Award -  7:21 –  Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian came out to present the CMA Award for Single of the Year to Tom Rhett for “Die A Happy Man.”

4) Performance – 7:28 – Kelsea Ballerini performs “Peter Pan” while two dancers perform an aerobatic contemporary routine.





























5) Presentation & Award -  7:32 – Hayley Orrantia (X Factor USA) and Olivia Newton John came out to present the CMA for Song of the Year goes to “Humble & Kind” written by Lori McKenna (performed by Tim McGraw).

6) Performance – 7:35 – Jason Aldean and Brooks & Dunn cover the classic country melody of “Brand New Man.”

7) Performance – 7:43 - Elle King and Dierks Bentley sing “Different For Girls” Which won in the Musical Event category)



8) Performance – 7:48 - Maren Morris performs as her big voice rings out on “My Church” with a gospel choir and horns.

9) Presentation & Award – 7:54 - Jennifer Garner presents New Artist of the Year to Maren Morris!

10) Performance – 7:57 - Barbara Mandrell introduced Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood who kicked off with the June and Johnny duet “Jackson,” then “Chug-a-lug,” “Don’t it Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man,” “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden,” “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” George and Tammy’s “Golden Ring.”

11) Performance – 8:10 - Carrie Underwood performed her latest single from the album Storyteller, “Dirty Laundry” wearing a black and white “cave girl” outfit. 12) Presentation & Award – 8:15 - Faith Hill presents the Album of the Year to Eric Church.

13) Performance – 8:18 -  Little Big Town sing “Better Man” penned by Taylor Swift. The celebrated vocal group performed in front of an unusual backdrop that made it look like they were singing in the middle of a wheat field. Karen Fairchild took center stage on the performance, delivering the song’s powerful, wistful lyric about a love that is lost due to someone just not being ready for it.

 14) Performance – 8:25 - Miranda Lambert performs “Vice” standing alone in front of a heavy vintage theatre-style curtain, looking stunning in a sexy re-imagined version of a sleek black pant suit. Lambert began her latest single, “Vice,” a capella, showing off her flawless vocals and bringing attention to the well-written lyrics…Read More  

 15) Performance –  8:30 - Matthew McConaughey introduces Tim McGraw who sings “Humble and Kind” as songwriter Lori McKenna is in the audience crying.
16) Performance –  Alabama and Brad sing “Elvira” as the CMAs head for a commercial.

17) Performance – 8:40 - Alan Jackson and George Strait sing “Troubadour” as clips of past Entertainers of the Year flash on the video screen. Jackson kicked the performance off with a sweet rendition of his classic hit. Dressed to the nines in all black suit, with just a touch of glitter and a white cowboy hat, Jackson sang the lovely song as clips of past CMA Entertainer of the Year Award winners played in the background. Just some of the stars featured in video the included the legendary George Jones, who said the honor “made my whole life,”  and Johnny Cash, who told aspiring young singers to “do it your way,” a message he lived and breathed throughout his career. 20) Presentation & Award – 8:57 -  Josh Dallas, Cam and Cole Swindell hand out the Vocal Group of the Year award to Little Big Town.

21) Performance –  Beyonce & The Dixie Chicks combine to sing Bey’s “Daddy’s Lessons.”
The R&B superstar's appearance at the annual ceremony had been rumoured earlier in the day, but the 32-year-old stunned fans as she took to the stage alongside the country music trio, who have been performing the song as part of their DCX MMXVI tour in recent months.
Wearing a low-cut sparkling gold gown with puffy shoulders, Beyonce looked confident and poised as she belted out the track from her album Lemonade.

The song hit headlines when Beyonce dropped Lemonade back in April (16) due to its country feel. Along with a horn intro, references to Texas, an acoustic guitar and hand claps setting out the rhythm and a story about the lessons she learned from her father and former manager Matthew Knowles, Daddy Lessons had all the markings of a country hit - a drastic departure from Beyonce's usual sound.
Country star Dierks Bentley said of the song after hearing Lemonade: "There is just something intangible about it that it feels like a country song. It's not just choruses that are catchy and verses that could be intermixed anywhere as some pop songs are. It's a real story that she tells about what's going on in her life growing up."
Beyonce's performance alongside the Dixie Chicks on Wednesday night proved such a hit with fans and viewers that it topped the Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 chart - a chart which measures the real-time increase of discussions around artists and their music on Twitter.
Shortly after the CMA performance, the Dixie Chicks - Natalie Maines, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire - also took to Twitter to share a link to an official studio version of their duet with Beyonce on Daddy Lessons.

It marks a rare studio offering from the country trio, who haven't released a studio album since Taking the Long Way in 2006.
While the majority of people enjoyed Beyonce's performance with the Dixie Chicks, a shot of Kenny Chesney looking less than impressed as he witnessed the rendition from the audience quickly went viral, with viewers commenting on his "sour" looking expression.

22)  Presentation & Award -  Peyton Manning takes the stage who introduces his friend Kenny Chesney who was honoured with the Pinnacle Award.

23) Performance –  Thomas Rhett performs his CMA winning single “Die a Happy Man.”



24) Performance – Chris Stapleton and Dwight Yoakam perform the Willie Nelson/Ray Charles song “Seven Spanish Angels”, the track has become a timeless single, proving that country music knows no genre bounds.

25) Performance – Luke Bryan performs “Move.” Taking the stage in tight blue jeans and a black button-down shirt (sans sling), Bryan showcased his familiar hip shaking choreography throughout the song without missing a beat. His band surrounded him on stage with a futuristic blue and white contraption as he neared the edge of the stage while fans looked on. Then vet Lee Greenwood sang “Proud to Be an American” with Brad and Carrie as the CMA take a time out for another commercial break.

26) Performance – Florida Georgia Line and Tim McGraw united for FGL’s latest single “May We All.” Setting the stage with a dark scene complete with a black background and smoke pouring through the air, the guys rocked out with McGraw, who walked out to join the guys halfway through the track. With all three delivering a strong vocal performance, Tyler Hubbard played guitar while Brian Kelley bounced around the stage singing the chart-topper….Read More

28) Performance – 9:46 - Eric Church takes the stage to knock out “Kill a Word” joined by Rhiannon Giddens. Powerful words flashed across Eric Church’s face as he began his performance at the 2016 CMA Awards of his poignant tune “Kill a Word,” interrupting silence with his declaration against all things dark and hateful.
Church stood, solemn behind his signature aviators for the first verse, as lyrics like “hate,” “regret” and “fear” were projected onto his person. The stage soon lit up, revealing the band and soulful featured vocalist Rhiannon Giddens alongside Church, the backdrop scrolling a host of negative words…Read More

29) Presentation & Award – 9:55 - Lily Tomlin (9 to 5 actress) introduces her co-star pal Dolly Parton. She receives the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. Jennifer Nettles and Pentatonix kick off the tribute with “Jolene”, then Reba sings “9-5”, Kacey Musgraves sings “Here You Come Again.” Then Carrie Underwood along with Martina McBride sing the iconic world #1 smash “I Will Always Love You” as Maren Morris, Reba and Kacey Musgraves join in.
