As expected,
country star Miranda Lambert earned her first No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200)
with the debut of PLATINUM (RCA
Nashville/Sony Music Nashville). The set, her fifth release sold 179,646 copies in the week ending June
8, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Platinum"
also easily scored Lambert her fifth straight No.1 debut on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
Lambert is only
the 11th female country artist to top the Billboard 200, which became a
regularly published list in 1956. (For perspective on that total of just 11
leading country ladies: More than 400 acts have tallied a No. 1 album.). Previous
to Lambert, the last country female artist to get her first No.1 was Swift, who
topped the list for the first time on the chart dated Nov. 29, 2008 (when FEARLESS
bowed at No.1 seling 592,304 copies).
Impressively,
each of Lambert's albums have started with successively larger debut weeks. Her
first release, KEROSENE, bowed at No.18 on the Billboard 200 in 2005 with
40,000. She followed it up with 2007's CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND (BB200 No.6 with
53,000), Sept 29, 2009 release REVOLUTION (BB200 No. 8 with 65,875 copies; chart Oct 17, 2009) and
2011's FOUR THE RECORD (No.3 BB200 with 133,223 copies).
As of the chart
dated January 28, 2012, the REVOLUTION had sold 1,598,987 copies in the US.
In its 106 week,
chart June 7, 2014 saw Lambert’s Catalog album FOUR
THE RECORD (RCA
Nashville) make a No.185 Re-Entry on the Billboard 200 shifting another
2,200 copies to reach 992,000 sales since its November 1, 2011 release date (In
Canada it has sold 39,800
copies to date). It must be very close to selling Platinum at retail. In
its second retail week FOUR THE RECORD sold 53,146 (down 60%) then 28,270 (down 47%) and 24,284 (down
14%, for a 4-week tally of 238,972). The album spurned 5 Top 20 singles: "Baggage
Claim" (#3 Hot Country songs), "Over
You" (#1 Hot Country songs; CMA Award for Song of the Year/ ACM Award for
Song of the Year), "Fastest Girl in Town" (#3 Country Airplay; #7 Hot Country songs), "Mama's Broken
Heart" (#2 Country Airplay; #2
Hot Country songs; Academy of Country Song of the Year) and "All Kinds of
Kinds" (#15 Country Airplay;
#24 Hot Country songs)
So far from “Platinum”
the lead off single "Automatic" has reached #4 on Hot Country Songs,
afer 18 weeks a #3 peak on Billboard Country Airplay and #1 on the Mediabase
chart.
"Somethin'
Bad" the duet with Carrie Underwood which they have performed at the CMA
Festival, Billboard Music and CMT Awards has so far reached #28 on Country
Airplay and #5 on Hot Country Songs (bolstered by first week digital sales of
107,000 copies)

Lambert passes Carrie
Underwood, who has scored four No.1s in her first four tries, a still-active
streak dating to 2005; Underwood has also debuted at No. 1 with all four sets.
The other acts to arrive with multiple career-starting No.1s: LeAnn Rimes,
Gretchen Wilson (three each), Wynonna Judd, Billy Ray Cyrus, Kellie Pickler and
Lady Antebellum (two each).
Miranda stated,

interview and she lined up several big TV appearances to promote it.

Then she was up early for an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America. Following her performance of "Somethin' Bad" on the 2014 CMT Music Awards Wednesday night, Miranda headed back to ABC's The View on Friday, June 6, for another performance of "Automatic."

Allmusic (4.5 STARS) Platinum is a double-edged
title. The first edge refers to Miranda Lambert's hair -- as she sings on the
title track, "what doesn't kill you only makes you blonder" -- the
second refers to her fame, a topic she returns to often throughout her fifth
record. ...
Platinum is notable because Lambert tries to be everything to
everyone here and damn near succeeds. There are times when she drifts too far
toward crass crossover, but she doesn't run risks when she adopts a vocoder,
which she does to great aplomb on "Smokin' and Drinkin'...while working
with Brandy Clark on "Two Rings Shy," songs that reaffirm her taste
for

sharply crafted
modern country, but Platinum is cannily constructed, opening with the most
modern tunes .... Perhaps Platinum would've benefitted from a tighter
construction, but its mess and lopsided sequencing wind up appealing: at its
heart, this is a classic double-album where the misses enhance the home runs
and, eventually, are endearing on their own terms.
Billboard (by Chuck Dauphin) After close listening and examination, I think
that if Miranda doesn’t add to her winning total, it’s not going to have
anything to do with the music. It’s definitely here in great abundance, as
Platinum signifies her most diverse and complete body of work to
date......Needless to say Miranda Lambert has once again proven herself to be
one of the most consistent artists in the format. Nobody in the commercial
world of Country Music seems to be doing it this good time in and time
out. Work on a few more acceptance
speeches. You just might need them!
USA Today (3 Stars out of 4) ...Though it would seem she has some wildcat
years left, the singer, who has been married for three years, is embracing a
more reflective phase. Yet her wit, humor and sass are intact. If there's an
off-note, it's the Thelma & Louise-themed Somethin' Bad, her duet with
Carrie Underwood, which tries too hard to be a barroom stomper. Download:

Roughstock (Rating: 4.5 STARS) First single “Automatic” felt like the
perfect bridge song from Four The Record to Platinum as it blends a bit of what
both albums have and Platinum is clearly
a big evolution in Miranda Lambert’s
musical journey.... “Smokin’ And Drinkin’” (which features Little Big Town) is
unlike anything she’s done before and might actually rub some folks the wrong
way. The same could be said for the percussive loop-filled “Platinum.” Vocally
and lyrically, it feels like something Miranda would do but melodically it’s
different. Which is good. With 16 tracks, Platinum, has quite a bit of music to
digest. But like her previous
albums, it
presents Miranda Lambert as who she is, one of the top stars in all of country
music.
(Rating: 1 1/4
of 2 guns up) Platinum commits some sins that are unfortunate, but not at all
unexpected from the genre’s top female artist, but then atones for them with
other worthy offerings until overall the scales are tipped slightly to the
good. You’re never going to get the bold strike, the heavily-thematic sonic or
lyrical opus you want from an artist like this, which would be the only way to
truly engage the adverse forces in country music and attempt to wrangle control
from their grips. So you just hope to get more good than bad, and that is what
Platinum delivers.
Country Weekly (Rating: A) Just when you thought you had seen all of the
colors and designs that make up Miranda Lambert, she turns the wheel and sends
the gems tumbling into all new, amazing patterns. The newest kaleidoscope in
her collection is made of platinum, and you’d do well to give it a spin.....It
may have been a bit of foreshadowing to name the album Platinum, and perhaps a
little law of attraction at play. Although the title is also an album track
referring to hair color, the depth of this project goes further than Miranda’s
roots.
For The Country Record Often, Miranda dances between the plain
and simple and the deeper meaning, not allowing herself to stray too far from
country’s tried and tested, easily understood formula...... On one level, there
are tracks that will surely do well on radio and yet on another they are perfectly
in line with her artistry and a wonderful progression where we might have
expected her to become lazy......the album that is about to unfold is possibly
her best yet.

AS I AM slipped 2-3 on the Billboard (1-2 Country) with 48,019 copies sold
(down 26%) in its third week.
The “Now That’s
What I Call Country Music! series sits at #3 this week with the seventh
installment hitting with 30k scanned the week of CMA Music Festival. Lucy Hale
debuts at #4 (#14 overall) with 18k fans taking home her debut album “Road
Between” for DMG Nashville.
The Now That’s What I Call Country Vol. 7
(Universal Music Group Nashville) made a debut at No.11 on the BB200 (#3 Country) selling 30,223 copies.
It features 18
established hits by the likes of Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Brad
Paisley, Hunter Hayes, Lady Antebellum, Thomas Rhett and Parmalee. (see Tray Inlay)The disc also offers a “what’s next” bonus with Leah
Turner’s “Pull Me Back.” Each of the six previous editions reached the top 10
on Top Country Albums. Five hit the top five.

Roughstock (Rating: 3.5 STARS) It’d be
easy to dismiss Road Between from “Pretty Little Liars” star Lucy Hale as a
vain cash-in attempt from an actress but if you knew Lucy Hale’s story at all,
you’d know that the Memphis, TN native started out as a singer (joining the
“American Juniors” band after appearing on that TV program) before acting offers
came her way. Now in her early 20s, the talented Hale is the flagship artist
for DMG Nashville and worked
with Mark Bright and Mike Daly on the recording of
Road Between.....Hale’s voice is strong throughout the project from the sweet
tale of healthy relationships in “From The Backseat” to the melancholic “Red
Dress,” a duet with Joe Nichols..... But
for as good as these songs there are a couple of standouts. First is“Nervous
Girls,” a song which showcases Hale’s looking for something different and has a
song here that undoubtedly will hit home for any teenage girl or even
twenty-something or forty-something woman. It’s a song that could be a big hit
on radio if they only would give it a chance and it has sharp, on point lyrics.
“Just Another Song” is the other clear standout. “Song” is about those songs
which take us back to memories of our lives, and this one, well, it’s about a
song that recalls the memories associated with a deep, true love that ended....
While Road Between will not be an album for everyone, there’s enough here to
suggest a singer that could and probably should be around for the years to come
as more than just that actress who sometimes sings.
Allmusic (Rating: 3.5 Stars) Lucy Hale portrays
Aria Montgomery, the hippest of all the Pretty Little Liars, so there's a
slight cultural dissonance by her decision to sing contemporary country, not
pop, on her 2014 debut album, Road Between. It's country in its intent and
often in its pedigree -- the record is largely produced by ex-Whiskeytown
member Mike Daly .. but the feel of Road Between is pristine pop, thanks in
large part to Hale's crisp, chipper delivery. Grit is a foreign concept to
Hale, a point that's accentuated on "Red Dress" when Nichols'
baritone twang makes her precise enunciation seem extra earnest, but that
eagerness to please is also often charming, particularly when combined with
Daly's bright production. Generally, Road Between is better when it's lighter.
When the tempo slows, so does the momentum.....Road Between is irrepressibly
charming commercial pop.

Allmusic (Rating: 3.5 STARS) The hick-hop boom of
the 2013-2014 season continued with the Big Smo's major-label debut album, the
release of which just happened to coincide with the premiere of his reality TV
series.
Put a couple country superstars on the guest list (Frankie Ballard and
Darius Rucker), jam the track list with anthems worthy of Kid Rock or Colt Ford
("Bumpy Road" and "Come On" are strong, stadium-sized
singalongs), and then stage the cover for that "rebel" appeal
("Smo...can you hold the moonshine jar a lil' higher?") and the
corporate cornpone formula will pay off splendidly, but Kuntry Livin' can't be
written off so easily. Partly because Smo's got charisma and partly because
he's a crafty, scrappy fellow with a Lil Wyte affiliation linking him to the
underground and an approach that says "Hell, I can do this!," which
might be the optimal way to come at a hick-hop album... the album runs 14
tracks long and stands strong right to the end....as hick-hop albums from
reality stars go, this is a monster truck rally on wax. Come 'round here
lookin' for Dylan, Radiohead, or Nas and Smo is likely to kick your ass, so
down a jar and believe him when he says "Hick Ross."
Roughstock (Rating: 3.5 STARS) ....There’s been a growing trend in the
underground of the Country music world, we like to call it the Rural Rap
movement (we dislike the ‘hick hop’ moniker) which blends rural, Country themes
and melodies with some rap elements (production and vocal delivery) and one of
the biggest grassroots artists of the rural rap movement is Big SMO, who is now
signed to Elektra Nashville, a major label that’s part of the Warner Music
Group....Like the other artists in the Rural Rap movement, Big SMO is not going
to be for everyone but for those that open their ears, they’ll hear musical
tracks that are primarily Country with mostly lyrics about rural and blue
collar lifestyles. Those that open their ears may just find themselves tapping
their toes or nodding their head along to the rhythmic Rural Rap found on
Kuntry Livin’. Those that don’t will get lost in the “Rap cannot be country”
statements. A statement which is without historical context given that Country
and the Blues and even Jazz (America’s musical art forms) have ALWAYS
incorporated elements in them that were later incorporated into Rap and Hip Hop
before returning to Country this past decade. As Big SMO proves on Kuntry
Livin’, Rural Rap is a movement that’s growing and crossing over to the
mainstream and probably will eventually gain some radio airplay in the years to
come as well.

Luke Bryan with "Play
It Again," nabbed a fourth
straight week atop Billboard's Country Airplay chart to surpass his previous
best No.1 run, set when "Crash My Party" linked a three-week reign
last July. The song logged 46.604 million
audience impressions (-3.080 million) and received 6,751 radio plays (-661)
No solo act had stayed on
top so long since Blake Shelton’s “Honey Bee” wrapped a four-week stand atop the
Aug. 11, 2011 list. Zac Brown Band also posted the first of four weeks atop the
Dec. 24, 2011 chart with “Keep Me in Mind.” No artist has spent more than four
weeks at No. 1 since Taylor Swift’s six-week reign with “Our Song” began on the
chart dated Dec. 22, 2007. The last solo male artist to control the survey
longer than four weeks is Kenny Chesney, who celebrated a five-week command
with “Never Wanted Nothing More” in 2007.
Top local audience
contributors for “Play” during the June 2-8 Nielsen BDS tracking week: KKBQ Houston (1.8 million impressions),
WUSN Chicago (1.5 million) and KKGO Los Angeles (1.2 million).
- Little
Big Town
posted a career-high debut with “Day
Drinking” (Capitol Nashville) at No.32. The song bagged
the weeks 3 trophies taking home “Most Increased
Audience”, “Most Added” and “Hot Shot Debut" honours. It logged 7.240 million audience impressions,
a gain of +7.240 million,
receiving 825 radio plays thanks to 52
fresh radio commitments (ADDS). That surpassed the group’s previous best start,
set when “Tornado” blew in at No.47 on the Oct. 13, 2012 list (peaking at
No.2.) The foursome premiered the new song on June 4 on The CMT Music
Awards and performed it on June 7 at a sold-out concert at Nashville’s LP
Field during the CMA Music Festival. The song introduces the group’s
upcoming sixth studio album, for which no release date or title has yet
been announced.
- Faith Hill had not
seen the top twenty in eight years. That changed last week as her duet
with Tim McGraw, “Meanwhile Back At Mama's” reached
#19 and and it made further progress with a 19-17 hop in its 8th chart
frame. She last visited the top twenty in 2006 with her last top ten,
“Sunshine And Summertime” (#7).

Miranda Lambert at No.3 ("Automatic") was the
lone solo female artist in the Top 30 Country Airplay songs.

- Florida Georgia Line with “This Is How We Roll” returned to
the No.1 (3-1) as sales rose 130% buoyed by the new pop remix featuring Jason
Derulo.
- Luke Bryan’s “Play It Again,” sales remained static but slid down to 1-2 (1,228,000 sales in 28 weeks)
- Dierks Bentley’s “Drunk On A Plane” moved 5-4 and scored sales increases thanks

Miranda Lambert's Platinum notched its first chart-topping
single. "Automatic," a
nostalgic tune about enjoying life's slower pace, debuted at No.26 on the
Billboard country charts back in February, and while it rests at No.3 on
Billboard's Country Airplay chart, it has already reached No.1 on the competing Mediabase chart. The song moved 3-1 logging 7,671 radio spins (+564) and 56.711 million audience impressions (+ 3.01
million) from 149 tracking stations for the tracking week June 1 to June 7,
2014 and published chart June 9th. It marked the first chart-topper from a solo
female artist since Carrie Underwood’s “See You Again” hit
the pinnacle in August
2013.
So it’s congratulates
to RCA VP/Promotion Keith Gale,
Dir./National Promotion Josh Easler and the entire RCA Promo team for scoring
this week’s #1 spot on the MEDIABASE chart with “Automatic.” The lead single is
her first #1 single since “Mama’s Broken Heart” in May of 2013 and her sixth
career solo chart-topper. She logged another #1 when teamed with Keith Urban on
"We Were Us," which hit #1 in Nov 2013.
Congratulations to UMG Nashville SVP/Promotion Royce Risser, Capitol Nashville VP/Promotion Steve Hodges and their entire promo team for earning 67 MEDIABASE Country adds on Little Big Town’s "Day Drinking."
