UK & IRISH News
A group called "Cowboys For Country Music" (dressed as
cowboys and cowgirls) line-danced outside a number of London radio stations to stage a protest in favour of more country music being played on UK radio. They
demonstrated outside the BBC's Broadcasting House last week (Sept 10) as well
as the headquarters of Global Radio in London - the company who own Capital FM
(photo

The group line-danced in front of the venues in an effort to make UK radio
stations play more mainstream American country music, by artists such as
the Grammy Award nominated The Band Perry and Lady Antebellum. The group (picture ), were holding placards and
wearing chaps and cowboy boots and danced to 'Cruise' (Remix) by Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly (photo).

A spokesperson for the group explained (>> video) that they had around "100
cowboys" protesting. He added of country music: "It makes up such a big percentage of the
music industry, it's extremely popular, obviously, Stateside, and there's a lot
of demand for it here in the UK but because the radio stations don't play
enough of it, that's why we want to try and promote that."
On their Facebook Page the group state: "Despite combined youtube hits totalling over
50 million and the anthemic single selling over 5 million copies in the US
alone, UK mainstream radio has so far largely ignored the song"

Her first single ‘Angel’ launched her into the spotlight as a contestant on

both the Celtic/Irish Folk genre and the American Country genre, as can be

Originally from Laytown, Co Meath, Maria lived & toured in Nashville
& LA, USA, for a number of years, perfecting her repertoire performing at

York’s world famous Mercury Lounge having played alongside such icons as Bob
Wooten (Johnny Cash’s Band), Raul Malo (The Mavericks), Hal Ketchum, Damien
Rice, Eleanor McEvoy, and Mundy. Headlined the ‘Angelica Huston Gala Event’ at
Beverly Hilton, Los Angeles & won previous awards at the ‘New York
International Film & Music Festival’. She recently performed her song
‘Quiet Man’ to Hollywood Star Maureen O’hara on her 90th Birthday. Furthermore,

Lucy Zirins, 21-year old
singer-songwriter hails from the small town of Burnley, Lancashire. She
combines a mix of original material with blues, soul, folk and gospel numbers
in her set with influences drawn from country and jazz. She cites artists such as Eva Cassidy, Carol King,
Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones and Muddy Waters as
her favourites (Blues Matters)
Lucy is fast making a name for herself as a performer and songwriter on
the live music scene.
Her family roots lie in Cumbria and Latvia, Lucy Zirins born in 1992,
made her stage debut in school as a 9-year-old singer and actress with the lead
role in Lynn Brittney’s nativity play ‘Babooshka’. She picked up the guitar
aged 12 after inheriting one from her late uncle and began songwriting early
on.
With visits to Italy and France under her belt by the time she was 18
years old, Lucy began gigging solo at just 16.
In 2010 Lucy was chosen as one of the “Class of 2010” singer-songwriters by PRS for Music and featured in a high profile event in London set up
to recognise and support the UK’s most promising young talent.

Having recorded her first EP at 16, and following with another soon after,
Lucy’s debut
album “Chasing Clocks” is the result of a long period of
hard work.
The album’s 12 tracks were
all written and arranged by Lucy herself, including the cello parts for 4 of
the tracks on the album, which she wrote and scored. The majority of the album
was recorded live with some of the country's finest musicians including
B.J.Cole (Pedal Steel) and Richard Causon (keyboards; Tom Jones, Ryan Adams).
The album was produced by long time mentor and friend Michael Messer,
who Lucy met at the tender age of 15 when chosen by the European Blues
Association to receive the Sam Mitchell Scholarship for slide guitar, receiving
a week’s tuition under his watchful eye. She returned the following year on the
John Jackson Scholarship. They made the bold decision together to record the
album in an analogue environment at Liam Watson’s (co-producer) Toe Rag
Studios, recording the majority of the album live with minimal overdubbing.
Embraced by many musical scenes, reflecting the mix of genres within her
songwriting and performance, in 2013 Lucy was nominated for 3 awards at the British Blues
Awards and won ‘Young Artist
of the Year’.
In 2012 Lucy was the runner-up in the ‘British Young Artist’ category at
the BBA’s and was winner of the ‘Best Newcomer’ category in the ‘Blues Matters’
Writers' Poll (as well as coming runner-up to in the Best Solo Artist category
too).
Lucy continues to work hard, gigging across Britain and writing the
songs she loves to create.

- Joey+Rory ("Made To
Last") and Heidi Feek
("The Only") have a Double-Feature album release on Oct 2. With the release of
two albums on one night they are bringing the Double Feature back to the Historic Belcourt Theater. For the price of one ticket $10 you will receive admission and both albums. Heidi Feek’s 2010 EP, ‘Eden,’ was a mix of angsty lyrics and pop and Americana melodies. On her debut full-length album, ‘The Only,’ Feek is sticking to her roots.“I found myself being drawn back to the music my dad would play for me growing up: a mixture of Elvis, Steve Earle, Chris Isaak and Dwight Yoakam,” she says. “That’s when I stumbled upon Chris Isaak’s ‘Forever Blue’ and it really rocked my world.” ‘The Only’ is set for release on Oct. 8th from Western Pin-Up Records.

- T Bone Burnett will receive the Maestro Award at the 2013
Billboard Hollywood Reporter Film and TV Music Conference on Wednesday,
Oct. 30. Burnett will be honored for his work in film and television
music, most recently as executive music producer of “Inside Llewyn Davis,”
the CBS Films release that opens in theaters Dec. 6.
- Hunter Hayes may
only be 22, but he’s caught the eye of Elton John, and has finished up on
the title track for the legend’s forthcoming "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"
tribute album - according to Billboard. “Hunter Hayes has done ‘Yellow
Brick Road,’ played all the instruments and he blew my mind,” John
enthused.
- Tim McGraw is already begun work on
the next record. "I've actually been in the studio over
the last couple weeks," McGraw told Billboard. Wife Faith Hill, whose birthday fell on Saturday night, has been hard at work
prepping her long-awaited follow-up to 2005's "Fireflies."
"She’s
workin' on stuff," McGraw says. "She’s writing songs and she‘s just in a
great place. She's really enjoying life and enjoying the process of

superstar Danica Patrick will co-host the fourth annual American Country Awards, airing
live from Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas Tuesday, Dec. 10 on FOX. This is Adkins’
fourth time serving as a host of the annual awards show.
BMI will honor
songwriter Dean Dillon with its Icon
award at the 61st
annual BMI Country Awards Nov. 5 in Nashville. The presentation will
recognize Dillon's "unique and indelible influence on generations of music
makers." BMI promises an "all-star musical tribute" to the
songwriter who also charted eight songs as a recording artist and wrote
hundreds more for other artists, including 54 songs recorded by George Strait.

Holler Back Girls: Lifetime has
ordered nine episodes of the docu-series Chasing Nashville to begin airing Oct. 22.
Produced by Superfine Films (Psychic Detectives) and Thinkfactory (R&B
Divas: Atlanta) the docu-series will follow Autumn Blair, Helena Hunt, Lauren
Marie Presley and Savannah Little from the "hollers of Appalachia" as
they pursue recording contracts in Nashville. Grammy-winning producer Keith
Thomas and songwriter/producer Deanna Walker have been cast to help mentor the
girls along the way.

- Mindy Smith will self-release her second holiday
effort, SNOWED
IN, October 29 on Giant Leap/TVX Records. Available at online
digital outlets, limited edition CDs will be available at her website. Co-produced with
Steve Buckingham, who co-produced Smith’s first three critically acclaimed
efforts, the five-song EP offers two original compositions, “Tomorrow Is
Christmas Day” and “Snowed In” along with three standards, “What Child Is
This,” “Silent Night,” and “Auld Lang Syne.”
- Rosanne Cash is
making the rounds during this week’s Americana Music Festival in promotion
of her first album in more than four years, THE RIVER & THE THREAD.
The John Leventhal-produced recordings will be released on Jan. 14, 2014
by Blue Note Records. Cash, who wrote the album’s 11 original tracks with
husband Leventhal, was joined in the studio by Cory Chisel, Rodney Crowell
(who also co-wrote one song), Amy Helm, Kris Kristofferson, Allison
Moorer, John Prine, Derek Trucks, John Paul White, Tony Joe White and Gabe

- Toby Keith’s limited
edition 'ZinePak version of DRINKS AFTER WORK will be available
exclusively at Walmart beginning Oct. 29.
Three additional songs, a 64-page fan magazine and two custom drink
coasters are included.
- Martina McBride has
been holed up in the studio working on a new album, expected out in
early 2014, but at this point, the project is essentially top secret. Although
details are scarce, McBride told CBSNews.com, "It's gonna
be awesome," adding, "We're feverishly working on it and
getting it done. I'm really really excited to be back in the studio making
new music." Details about the project are expected to be
unveiled soon.The upcoming album comes on the heels of "Eleven,"
the country star's most recent studio album, which surfaced in 2011. It's
been a couple of years, and McBride says she's eager to get new music out
to fans. "I just love to make music," said the
47-year-old singer, who released her debut album in 1992.
- Colt Ford, five years after
he released his debut album, updates the project with RIDE THROUGH THE COUNTRY REVISITED,
due Oct. 1. The original version featured John Michael Montgomery, Jamey
Johnson and Brantley Gilbert. The revision brings in Ronnie Dunn, Wynonna,
Charlie Daniels, Joe Diffie, the Lacs and John Anderson.
- Restless Heart will release their first Christmas album this holiday season. A RESTLESS HEART CHRISTMAS is set for release on Oct. 29 and will feature eight classic holiday songs, as well as two previously unreleased tracks. “In addition to new arrangements of classic Christmas standards, we also included a couple of brand new songs,” says Restless Heart’s Dave Innis. “‘Season of Harmony’ sets the tone for the album, and ‘Santa’s Prayer’ is about the true meaning of Christmas being overshadowed by commerciality.”

Hayes delivers "epic two-hour show." – Hunter Hayes seemed taken aback by the crowd that confronted him in the
Xfinity Arena at the Big E on Friday night, 7,000 strong, screaming along to
every song he sang, and swooning at every move he made. Hayes responded with an
epic two hour show, offering all of his hits and few covers as well,
culminating in a two-song encore that had some who had jumped the gun for the
exits scurrying back to their seat...
Tampa Tribune: Miranda Lambert showed tampa just what little girls are made of
when her locked and reloaded tour stopped at the MidFlorida Credit Union
Amphitheater Friday night. A montage set to "Who Runs the
World:Girls" featuring graphics of myriad famous gun toting women set the
stage for Lambert's opening "Fastest Girl in Town." Clad in a
sequined mini skirt, Lambert had a pink mic and a "hankering for gettin
into somethin." Her angel-is- a-devil smile endears her to fans as much as

Monroe's childhood was going just great until, at the age of 13, her dad

It's been just about 50 years since the Beatles touched down on American
soil, and the awards paid tribute to the game-changing moment in
music history with a tribute by Carrie who sang "Yesterday."
On February 9th, 1964, the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, performing
for 73 million viewers and changing the musical landscape forever.
“The
coolest thing about singing “Yesterday” on the #Emmys is the sweet letter I got
from @PaulMcCartney giving me his blessing to sing it!” the 30-year-old country
singer tweeted after the performance.

During the show, the Nashville actress
presented an award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, which
was won by Anna Gunn for her work on Breaking Bad.
Connie also gave an Emmy to
Henry Bromell‘s wife Sarah after he won Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series
for his work on Homeland.
Henry died earlier this year from a heart attack.
The ‘Nashville’ star and nominee wore a velvet column Naeem Khan
gown that stood out from the pack with it’s texture and colour. Connie’s signature
hair again showed that those locks are flawless!

Julianne Hough took a major
fashion risk when she hit the red carpet of the 2013 Emmy Awards.
The singer/actress and former DWTS professional dancer wore a ethereal Jenny Packham
Spring 2014 gown which showed off her stunning figure in the mint green dress
which featured a see-through skirt. Julianne's dress by the British designer is
a favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge, although we can't really new mummy Kate
popping this frock on royal duties. This super sheer, embellished dress is from
Packham's SS/14 collection was only just seen on the
catwalk at London Fashion Week, so Julianne has got in there nice and early. The
embellishment on this dress is pure Packham as is the extremely pretty pastel
blue shade but the see through element is not usually associated with the designer,
who's creations, while show stopping and beautiful, are rarely so raunchy!

Ed Sheeran has spent
several months hanging
out with Taylor Swift on her 2013 Red Tour, and the British pop star
has gotten to know country music’s sweetheart pretty well.
His conclusion? She’s a lot like the TV series ‘The Office’
— and that’s a good thing! “She’s got the
most English sense of humor out of any American that I’ve ever met,”
Sheeran answers when asked by E! News to dish a little-known fact about Swift. “She’s
just dry. She has a very dry sense of humour and Americans are usually like
slapstick comedy, that’s the big thing, but she’s very English.
Jason Aldean has Luke Bryan‘s
back. While the ‘That’s My
Kind of Night’ singer himself hasn’t responded publicly to comments made by
Zac Brown about his song, Aldean had
some strong words for people “runnin’ their mouths.” Aldean took to Instagram
to voice his opinion on the hot story. “I hear some other artist are bashing my boy Luke Bryan’s
new song, sayin’ it’s the worst song they have ever heard,” he
writes. “To those people runnin’ their mouths, trust me when I tell you that
nobody gives a s— what you think. It’s a big ol’ hit, so apparently the fans
love it which is what matters. Keep doin’ your thing LB!!!” -
Jason Aldean had a very different reaction, "I thought it was great,"
he tells Country Countdown USA with Lon Helton. "I wanted it. I wanted to cut it."
Aldean says he realizes, as an artist, not everyone is going to love every
decision you make. "I've figured that out over my career. When we put out
'Dirt Road Anthem,' there's gonna be people that are gonna bash you for it. 'Rap has no place
in country,' whatever. People either like it or they don't. Hopefully there's a
market for it. So I think ['That's My Kinda Night' is] a hit, and I was hoping
Luke wouldn't cut it so I could have it."

mean, and it’s okay to talk bad about people. When I grew up, you didn’t do
that. It’s a shame that that’s the way it is. This time I was on the wrong end
of a comment, and I’m not real happy about it. But I’m in my pickup truck, and
I’m heading into work. If that song makes him want to throw up, I hope I write
one today that gives him the flu because that means I'm doing my job right.

Texas rockabilly singer Mac
Curtis passed away on September 16, 2013.
The Rock and Roll of Fame inductee was born Erwin Curtis Jr. on January
16, 1939 in Fort Worth, Texas. He began playing guitar while in his early
teens. Between 1956 and 1958, King Records released a string of 45s.
After joining the US military, Curtis became a deejay in Korea. He
continued to work as a deejay after his return, and recorded several albums for
various record companies. With the growing popularity of rockabilly during the
1970s, he recorded for Rollin’ Rock Records and appeared on festivals. His 1968
release, "The Sunshine Man", hit No.35 on the U.S. Country albums
chart. Singles included "Early In The Morning" (1970/ # 35 Country) , "Honey, Don't" (1970,
#43 Country), "Don't Make Love" (1969 / #60 Country),"Happiness
Lives In This House" (1969/ #63 Country),"The Quiet Kind" (1968/
#64 Country), "The Sunshine Man" (1968/ #54 Country). He was later
elected to the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
Mac Curtis died on September 16, following injuries received in a car accident. Listen to Mac Curtis

Marvin Rainwater, who hit the
country top ten and pop top twenty in 1957 with "Gonna Find Me a
Bluebird", died on Tuesday (Sept 17, 2013) after a short illness. He was
88.
He was born
Marvin Karlton Rainwater on July 2, 1925 in Wichita, Kansas. Rainwater's
early life took a very different path as he studied classical piano until
losing part of his thumb as a teenager in a work accident. He then began
studies to be a veterinarian before spending time in the Navy.
- After
his time in the service, Rainwater took up the guitar and became
fascinated in country music, especially that of Roy Acuff. Publicists
later said he was part Native American and
1/4 Cherokee (which Marvin alledgely denied), Marvin began
wearing a buckskin jacket and headband while performing at local venues.
- In 1957,
Rainwater scored his biggest hit with the self-penned "Gonna Find Me a Bluebird" which
sold more than one million copies, followed by a duet with Connie Francis,
“The Majesty Of Love”, another million-selling
hit record. "Gonna Find Me a Bluebird" went Top 5 on
the Country Singles and #18 on the Pop Singles and was followed by the No. 1 U.K.
hit "Whole Lotta Woman" (1958/ #15
Country/ #60 Pop), "Nothin' Needs Nothin'(Like I Need You)"
(1958 / #11 Country) and "Half Breed" (1959/ #16 Country/ #66
Pop).
- Marvin
was also one of the first to record John D. Loudermilk's "The Pale
Faced Indian" which would eventually become the hit Indian
Reservation for both Don Fardon and Paul Revere & the Raiders.
- Rainwater's
voice gave
out in 1960 and he and MGM parted ways. After a couple of years
of vocal rehab, Marvin returned to record for a series of labels
(sporadically for Warwick Records in the UK), but without a hit. In the
late-70's, he developed throat cancer which he beat.Doctors in Nashville
told him he'd lose his voice but after seeking a second opinion at a
clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, instead of removing his vocal cords they
healed him.

- He
played the Wembley
International Festival of Country on 30th March 1975 in London

- Marvin
move to Aitkin, Minnesota during his time recovering from cancer where
he remained for the rest of his life. He is survived by three daughters (Judi who
lives in Wenatchee Washington; Lora who lives in Columbia Hieghts,
Minnesota; and Barbara who lives in Coon Rapids, Minnesota) and two sons
(Wade who lives in Minnesota, and Jimmy who lives in Alabama).
